Nationally, diners spend an average of $36.40 per person at a restaurant. New York City and Boston spend above the national average, with $46.14 in NYC and $41.54 in Boston.

Philadelphians are the highest tippers with an average 20.3% tip, up from 19.9% in 2015. Diners in Denver and Washington D.C. also show their server extra appreciation by tipping 19.5% and 19.2%, respectively, surpassing the national average tip of 18.1%. As restaurateurs experiment with eliminating tips in favor of higher menu prices, 43% nationally say they support it and hope it catches on, while 33% “hate it”. Diners in New Orleans are opposed to it the most (42%), followed by those in Miami and Charleston (40%).

For most of those surveyed, the days of dialing a restaurant to make a reservation are over. 57% report making restaurant reservations via internet and 25% make reservations with the touch of a finger on mobile dining apps. Diners in Washington D.C. seem to avoid calling at all costs as 77% say they make reservations online.

There’s no shame in browsing social media and double tapping restaurant and food pictures. Among diners who browse food photos on social media (53%), 75% say they have actually picked a place to eat based on shared food photos.

Dining out is not without its irritations. Nationally, diners reported noise is the most bothersome at 24%, followed by service (23%), crowds (15%), high prices (12%), and parking (10%). Restaurant furniture and style may also be annoying to diners. 70% of those surveyed say they are “over” backless chairs and stools.

As far as dining deal breakers, the survey revealed 36% of diners are turned off by a cash-only policy. Other deal breakers include sitting at communal tables (33%), an inflexible no-substitution policy (27%), and a strict reservation-only policy (19%).

Vacation is the perfect time to indulge in local cuisine. 56% of diners surveyed say they have or would eat multiple lunches or dinners during a trip to squeeze in all of the locale’s must-try dishes. Overwhelmingly, 70% of Honolulu residents have done this or would do it, followed by foodies in NOLA (65%) and Austin (64%). Some would even go the distance to travel for a good meal. 54% of diners said they would travel up to 30 minutes, 20% said a few hours, 13% would make a weekend drive, and 13% would go the farthest and jump on a plane or plan a vacation around a “must try” dish. Diners in Orlando are the most willing (31%) to travel a few hours, followed by Chicago and Nashville at 25%.

For some, a full phone battery is essential for keeping up-to-date on all food news. 56% of New York patrons have or would ask to charge their phone in a bar or restaurant, compared to the national average of 45%. Diners in Detroit and Seattle are less concerned with bothering staff about their phone batteries as 64% say they would not ask to charge their phones in a restaurant or bar.

Most diners aren’t willing to shell out some dough to get into a popular restaurant. 72% said they would not pay for a hard-to-get reservation, while there are some willing to do whatever it takes for the hottest seat in town. 20% of those surveyed said they would pay for a hard-to-get reservation and 8% said they have done it.

According to surveyors, honesty is typically the best policy. 81% of diners said they would never lie about it being a special occasion for a restaurant freebie, while a cool 10% have told a little white lie. Honolulu is the most daring as 28% of diners claimed they have or would lie about a special occasion to get something for free.
It’s time to celebrate that one special lady – Mom! Zagat polled nearly 1,000 people nationwide, 71% of whom are mothers, to see how families are planning to celebrate Mother’s Day.

First rule of thumb, don’t be cliché and leave a trail of crumbs; only 4% of moms report wanting breakfast in bed this year. More than half of them (53%) say they want to go out to eat with family on Mother’s Day, with brunch as the preferred meal according to 39% of moms. And while you’re there, stick to the classics – 43% of moms favor Eggs Benedict, 35% favor omelettes, and 19% say they want the ubiquitous avocado toast.

When it comes to the most annoying brunch trends, respondents cite loud, live music (31%), communal tables (25%) and no reservation restaurants (21%) as the top 3 irritants.

Things that make mom happy? The top brunch cocktail is a Mimosa (23%) followed closely by a Bloody Mary (22%). However, its best to save bottomless brunch drinks for your friends because 65% of moms only have 1-2 celebratory cocktails.
Zagat polled nearly 800 people nationwide to find out about their Valentine's Day plans and preferences, and how they will (53%) or won't (47%) be spending the holiday.

Of those celebrating, 40% say “it is a time to celebrate love!” while 8% say they’re only doing so because their partner would make them feel guilty otherwise. Among those who choose not to celebrate, 33% say it’s because Valentine’s Day is a made up holiday while 14% are boycotting because they are single.

If you haven't made a Valentine’s Day restaurant reservation yet, you can bet the hottest seats in town are taken, as the majority of surveyors (53%) say they’re going out to dinner. This year, diners report spending more than ever on a Valentine’s Day meal. The average expected tab is $170.53 which is up 16% from $146.52 in 2012.

Think romantic ambiance is most important for your Valentine? Forget it. 51% of diners say they are most interested in how good the food is. So what’s on the menu? The most popular cuisine this year is Italian (17%) followed by French (13%), Seafood (13%), Steak (11%), American (10%), Sushi (7%), Mexican (3%) and Chinese (1%). One fifth (20%) of Valentine’s Day diners say they don’t care about the cuisine.

Unsurprisingly, more men prefer a steak dinner than women (16% vs. 8%).
Aside from dining out, the most popular ways to celebrate love include exchanging gifts like chocolate or jewelry (27%), cooking a meal at home (16%) or ordering in (10%).

Not every Valentine’s Day has a perfect rom-com ending though. A minority 5% of surveyors admit they have dumped someone/been dumped on Valentine’s Day, or broken up with someone because Valentine’s Day was coming….Ouch!
Looking for the best places to eat in NYC? The scores have been tallied, and today, Zagat is unveiling its 2017 New York City Restaurants results, covering 2,171 eateries - from food halls to fine dining, tacos to trattorias - and everything in between. The results are based on the feedback of 30,961 local diners and curated by Zagat’s expert editors. Results are available today in the new Zagat iPhone App, on Zagat.com and in the 2017 Zagat NYC guide.

Known for its succinct reviews, Zagat proves that small things are easier to digest. To highlight this Zagat is opening a Tiny Cafe at Astor Place serving up free tiny dishes inspired by some of the city’s best restaurants from Thursday, 10/27 to Saturday, 10/29.

Mini tacos from Los Tacos No. 1

This year, New Yorkers report eating 4.9 lunches and dinners per week and spending an average of $50.11 per person for dinner. In comparison, in 2014, the average meals out per week was 4.7 and the average cost was $48.15.

This year’s top rated newcomer is French-American restaurant Kingsley in the East Village which reviewers say is the “best-kept secret - but not for long”. Following behind are Indian Accent, Lilia, Quality Eats, Llama Inn, High Street on Hudson, Le Coq Rico and Cafe Altro Paradiso. Notable restaurants that are too new to have ratings but have had great word of mouth include Agern, Emmy Squared, Karasu, Le Coucou, Olmsted and Paowalla.

Kingsley (credit: Michael Altobello)

Eric Ripert’s “world class”, “transcendent” French Seafooder Le Bernardin wins Top Food for the 8th year in a row - an unprecedented achievement in the 38 year history of Zagat. Le Bernardin also swept Top Service, Most Popular, Top French and Top Seafood. Only one major category, Top Decor, was won by another restaurant, Asiate, in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Other contenders for the Top Food ratings are Bouley, Jean-Georges, Daniel, Gotham Bar and Grill, Peter Luger, Tocqueville and Gramercy Tavern. Relative newcomer, Gabriel Kreuther broke onto the Top Food list coming in at No. 7.

A number of first-time category winners are shaking things up: these include Eataly (Food Halls), Indian Accent (Indian), Juliana’s (Pizza), Kingsley (American), Los Tacos No. 1 (Mexican), Mu Ramen (Ramen) and Two Little Red Hens (Dessert).

With the influx of new pizza-pasta-focused places opening, such as Pasquale Jones, Emmy Squared, Lilia and La Sirena, it’s safe to say that carbs are back! And 55% of New Yorkers say they love this trend. To keep up with this demand, Zagat has added new lists this year for Donuts (winner: Peter Pan Donut) and Bagels (winner: Absolute Bagels).

With election season in full swing, Zagat asked diners which past, current or future president they would trust for a restaurant recommendation. The winner: Barack Obama. If diners were owed a favor from the president in the form of a prized NYC dinner reservation at a hot new place, the top picks were Momofuku Nishi, Le Coucou and La Sirena. When queried about their plans for the election night, (54%) said they would be watching tv at home over takeout.

Food halls, which were almost non-existent 10 years ago, have been expanding with more on the horizon. This year, newcomers include The Great Northern Food Hall, The Pennsy, TurnStyle, and Union Fare, while Jean-Georges’ seafood-themed food hall and the Bourdain Market at Pier 57 on the Hudson are on tap.

Among Zagat reviewers, a record 41% say they approve of eliminating tipping. Newcomers such as Agern, Faun, Freek’s Mill, Pasquale Jones and b joined a growing number of established restaurants like Dirt Candy, Huertas, Eleven Madison Park and Danny Meyer restaurants (The Modern, b) in adopting the tip free practice, but raising prices to compensate.

Restaurant trends like farm-to-table dining resonate with diners with 70% of New Yorkers claiming they love it, while roughly 65% of respondents now dismiss gimmicky dishes such as the gold donut and rainbow bagel, and 58% say kale salad is a dish they are tired of seeing on menus.

While Zagat’s trusted guidance remains the same, we have updated the Zagat look and feel. See for yourself by downloading the Zagat iPhone app or getting the 2017 Zagat NYC guidebook to start planning your next great meal.
According to the survey, 60% of avid diners across the U.S. say they browse food photos on social media, and among them, 75% say they have picked a place to eat based on these photos alone. From trendy foods to dining deal-breakers, the survey uncovers the habits and preferences of nearly 10,000 avid restaurant goers across the nation, highlighting 26 U.S. cities.
Not only are food-obsessed American diners scrolling through their feeds to check out the latest food shots, but they have no qualms about snapping their own photos while at restaurants. Almost half of diners nationally (44%) say that they take food photos when dining out to share on social media, with the most likely food photographers hailing from Charleston, San Diego (both 53%), Austin, Miami and Orlando (all 51%). In fact, 19% say they have picked a place to eat just so they can take their own food photos.

Once they’re at the restaurant, diners are so focused on getting the perfect shot that 60% admit to stopping dining companions from eating so they can take food photos. 50% say they have taken photos of every dish at the table and 5% have even asked another table if they can photograph their dish. It doesn’t come without consequence though as 8% of those who take food photos to share on social media say they have even dropped their phone on their meal trying to get the perfect shot. Check, please!

When it’s time to post those hard-earned pictures to social media, 41% of diners say they do so right at the table, 34% say they post later that night/from the comfort of their bed, 14% say they do it on the way home, 10% save them for #tbt or later, and 1% admit slipping into the restroom during the meal. Foodie photographers in Detroit and San Antonio (both 58%) are most likely to post photos at the table.
Trendy foods on the rise this year include avocado toast, according to 33% of respondents who say they “love it,” which is up from 24% last year. Other trendy foods feeling the love are ramen (31%, up from 26% last year), Sriracha, and pork belly (both 31%). Honolulu diners are the biggest fans of ramen (53% say they “love it”) while Angelenos are having a moment with avocado toast (41%). Orlando diners are hip to quinoa (34% “love it” vs. 28% nationally) and a quarter of New York respondents say they “love” cauliflower rice.
Other trendy foods are so yesterday. Food mashups (i.e. cronut, ramen burger) are on their way out according to the 38% of diners nationally who say they are “over it.” Those most fed up with the trend are respondents in Seattle (50%).
The top pet peeve (or dining deal-breaker) that would stop people from dining at a particular restaurant is a cash-only policy (38%), followed closely by communal tables, no-substitution policy (both 33%), reservation-only policy (20%), no-reservation policy (19%), no photos allowed (13%) and none of the above (25%). Diners in Charlotte are the most annoyed by a cash-only policy (50%) and Houston diners detest no-substitutions (48%).Knowing where your food comes from is still hugely important according to 73% of diners nationally who say Farm-to-table-dining is a much-loved restaurant practice. Those in Portland, OR are amongst the highest proponents in the nation (79%) and those in Charlotte are at the lower end of the spectrum (68%).

When it comes to trends in mixology, respondents are loving fresh juices in cocktails (63%), but the jury is split on fancy ice in cocktails; 25% say they “love it” and 25% say they are “over it.” The other half don’t mind it or have no opinion.

Additional findings: When asked if they would ever pay their restaurant bill with a mobile payment app, 66% of diners say “Yes, I’ve done it, or I would” while 34% say “No,” compared to 59% and 41% last year respectively. When it comes to asking to charge their phone in a bar or restaurant, 41% of diners nationally say “Yes, I’ve done it, or I would.” New Yorkers are the most likely to do this (56%) and those in Honolulu are the least (29%). Almost 1 in 5 respondents (17%) admit they have or would lie about it being a special occasion in order to get a freebie while 14% have or would fake a food allergy to get a dish modified to their liking.
If it feels like everyone today is a foodie, well it should. According to the survey, 77% of respondents consider themselves to be foodies -- 41% say they are secretly foodies, but hate the term while the other 36% say “yes, with my fork on my sleeve!”

The effects of hanger can manifest in some entertaining ways, so naturally, the topic piqued our curiosity. Is this a real phenomenon? And how do diners feel about it?

Doing what Zagat does best, we polled the people and learned that 62% of Americans say they have experienced hanger. Of the 1,434 hangry respondents, common feelings include Irritability (60%), Impatience (50%), Light-headedness (31%), Whininess (20%), and Listlessness (12%). However, the tell-tale symptom of someone who is hangry is a term we’ve affectionately coined Hangry Eyes. We made a video inspired by this frustrating emotion — and by the music of the 1980’s.

When hangry, diners admit to having eaten too fast (58%), made a dining decision they regretted (45%), alienated a loved one (20%) and even been rude to a restaurant employee (12%). When the feeling arises, 61% say they are only somewhat or not at all in control of their bad behavior, with 30% in total control and 9% who aren’t even aware they are hungry until after they eat. If someone you know is hangry, respondents say the best thing to do is encourage them to eat/get them something to eat (63%).

While the Zagat brand has evolved over time, we thought it was time to cook up an update to our iOS app to provide our foodie fans with the freshest, most relevant content -- while on the go. Beyond giving our logo a fresh coat of paint and new look, we redesigned the app so that it’s centered around you. You know where you are and what you’re hungry for, and your dining app should too -- so based on your location and the time of day, our app serves up recommended places nearby.

While the new iOS app is bursting with upgrades, Zagat still works the way it always has: by gathering the wisdom of avid diners and distilling the consensus view into that one crystalline review you need. We continue to collect separate ratings for Food, Decor and Service so you can get granular on a restaurant’s virtues, but we’ve simplified them in a new, easy-to-read and rate 5-point scale.

The new Zagat iPhone app is available today in the App Store. Take it out for lunch and share your dining experience with the rest of the Zagat community.
This season, Moker heads south to bust her preconceptions of the region and experience some of the country's most authentic eats. The season 2 trailer is available on YouTube.com/Zagat with new episodes posted every Thursday starting June 2nd.

On the “road trip” style show, Molly wrestles a 60-pound catfish with famous New Orleans chef, Brian Landry and takes viewers along for a rare peek inside the Tabasco Factory. The proper Wisconsin lady crashes a bachelorette party in the Big Easy and spends a day boozin’ on Bourbon Street to try native delicacies like Brandy Milk Punch, the Sazerac and Purple Drank.

On this journey throughout Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, Molly meets up with world-champion pitmaster and Food Network star, Chris Lilly, to try his super-secret family white sauce. She pits it against Mississippi’s famous Comeback Sauce for a state border-crossing taste test. Molly goes behind the scenes at the Waffle House, visits a top-secret moonshine distillery in the Appalachian Mountains, tries some Hot Chicken in Nashville with the legendary Prince family, and goes oyster picking in Charleston.
At least according to the Zagat 2016 National Dining Trends survey, in which a whopping 79% of diners declared themselves to be a foodie. The survey uncovers the habits and preferences of 9,248 avid diners in 26 major U.S. cities.

That would be Sriracha, according to 31% of respondents, who “love it.” The hot chili sauce was followed closely by quinoa (27%), ramen (26%), and avocado toast (24%). Less love was given to bone broth (13%) and uni (sea urchin), at 12%. Green juice was the ugly duckling (11%).

Le Bernardin Breaks Records; Casual Dining Continues to Gain Ground; For Second Consecutive Year, a Sushi Omakase Spot Wins “Top Newcomer” Title

The votes are in! Today Zagat reveals its 2016 New York City Restaurants results, covering 2,237 restaurants voted on by 34,178 avid diners. Ratings and reviews are available on Zagat.com and across Google Maps and Search. Zagat guide books will be hitting the shelves at local retailers starting October 13th.

New Yorkers report eating out (lunch and dinner combined) 4.9 times per week, above the national average of 4.5 times per week. When dining out, New Yorkers are generous and leave 19.2% gratuity (above the national average of 18.9%). On average they spend $48.44 per person for dinner (vs. the $36.30 national average).

This year New York welcomed 119 hot and noteworthy newcomers vs. just 53 closings. The newcomers include a healthy crop of openings from big name restaurateurs: Mario Carbone/Rich Torrisi (Santina), Andrew Carmellini (Little Park), David Chang (Fuku), Gabriel Kreuther (Gabriel Kreuther), Enrique Olvera (Cosme), Charlie Palmer (Charlie Palmer at the Knick), Marcus Samuelsson (Streetbird), Masayoshi Takayama (Kappo Masa), Alex Ureña (Tasca Chino), Jonathan Waxman (Jams), Jody Williams/Rita Sodi (Via Carota) and Galen Zamarra (Almanac).

The city’s biggest winner this year is Le Bernardin (Food, Service, Most Popular) which continues to break records, winning Top Food for the 7th year in a row – the first restaurant ever to win in this category for 7 consecutive years. Top Decor was awarded to the Four Seasons, and omakase sushi specialist Shuko is this year’s Top Newcomer.

Though its bar scene never cools off, Brooklyn’s restaurants had a lower-key year – especially compared to the borough’s recent history of splashy openings. Roughly 15% of openings were in Brooklyn this year, vs. 25% last year. In addition, high-profile, higher-end entries The Elm, The Grocery and Marco’s all closed their doors.

The trend towards high-quality, casual-style dining continues to grow. Last year, Coffee, Dumplings, Ice Cream, and Taco Joints were given their own special categories as a result. This year, there were so many hot and noteworthy casual destinations that new categories were added for: Ramen, Food Halls, 40 Under $40: Full-Meal Winners, and 20 Under $20: Quick-Bite Winners. Several celebrity chefs have followed suit, opening an impressive collection of casual outposts this year (such as Marcus Samuelsson’s Streetbird and David Chang’s Fuku).

Our Top Newcomers list is notably strong this year. For the second year in a row, our Top Newcomer is a sushi omakase hot spot, Shuko (last year, the Top Newcomer was Sushi Nakazawa), signaling that the high-end sushi experience is on the rise. The remainder of the roster is comprised of acclaimed hits, too: Almanac, Javelina, Tuome, Little Park, Delaware and Hudson, Upland and Cosme.

What’s old is new again – or, at least, many NYC stalwarts were reborn in new digs. Sex and the City -era hot spot Asia de Cuba, ‘80s pioneer Jams and the iconic Rainbow Room reopened after being off the scene for many years. Amanda Cohen’s Dirt Candy, David Chang’s Momofuku Ko, Danny Bowien’s Mission Chinese and Danny Meyer’s Untitled also made re-entrances in more spacious surrounds.
The survey focuses on high-quality, counter-service restaurants that opened after 2005 with between two and fifty locations nationally.

The findings reveal that the majority of participants (80%) say they eat out at least a few times a month at a fast-casual restaurant. Of these respondents, 60% say eat fast-casual meals most often for lunch.

Chef-driven fast-casual restaurants have been popping up all over, like DC-based spots G By Mike Isabella and Spike Mendelsohn’s Good Stuff Eatery, Art Smith’s LYFE Kitchen in the Bay Area and Rick Bayless’ Tortas Frontera in Chicago. Having a big-name chef at the helm is important to diners. In fact, 65% say they are more likely to go to a place if it is gourmet or chef-driven. Additionally, 78% of folks say they would like to see more local chefs open fast-casual eateries.

Tortas Frontera, Chicago

But how popular is tipping at these counter-service spots? About one-third of participants report not tipping in fast-casual restaurants while another one-third opt to leave between $1 – $2.

Burgers are still a tried-and-true favorite, dominating as the most-consumed fast-casual cuisine. Following close behind are Mexican, American and Pizza.

When it comes to which qualities are most important in a fast-casual locale, diners say it’s Food/ingredient quality above all – followed by Cleanliness and Value. Interestingly, despite many of these spots being known for their fast-casual format, Convenience & speed fall behind in fourth place.

More than half (54%) of diners say that it is important to them that a fast-casual establishment be GMO-free. Another 59% feel that offering organic food is important.

Most diners enjoy their fast-casual meals with Family (40%), while others most frequently go it Alone (27%), with Friends (22%) or Colleagues (11%). Among those in their 20’s, the majority share their fast-casual meals with Friends most often, though this decreases with age. Eating with Family or Alone, however, increases with age.

While many of the city’s best restaurants may be on the pricier side, Zagat’s list of Best Cheap Eats offers places with high food scores with an average cost of $25 or less:
According to the Zagat National Dining Trends survey, Portland diners eat out 3.4 times per week for a combined lunch and dinner, less than the 4.5/week national average. The average spent per person for dinner out is $34.36, a relative bargain compared to the national average of $39.40. Once the meal ends, diners leave an 18.3% gratuity — the lowest reported tip among the U.S. cities Zagat covers — and below the 19.3% national average.

Locals say their favorite cuisine is Italian (29%), followed by Seafood (24%), American and French (both 7%), Mexican (6%), Japanese (5%), Thai (4%), Indian (3%), Spanish and Vegetarian (each 2%) and all others totaling 11%.
The findings reveal the preferences and divisive opinions of more than 1,000 avid diners around the U.S.

Whether you fire up the grill at home, or leave it to the professionals, food is a major part of warm weather months. America’s most quintessential summer food, according to more than half of respondents, is the hamburger, followed by hot dog, fried chicken and fish tacos. The New York Street Dog takes top honors as the the preferred style of hot dog, with the Chicago Dog and Coney Dog trailing close behind.

The majority of diners say that ice cream is their favorite summer sweet treat (51%) - and move over chocolate, because cookies ‘n’ cream takes top honors. The runners up are Vanilla and Mint chocolate chip, followed by Chocolate, and Coffee.

As for favorite summer coffee drinks, Frozen blended coffee drink top the list overall, followed by Iced latte and Regular iced coffee.

Lobster rolls have become a hotly contested category among diners. When asked which style they prefer, the Connecticut style lobster roll (warm with butter) wins out over Maine style (cold with mayo) by nearly two-to-one.

The perfect non-alcoholic drink refreshment to compliment these savory summer eats, according to 37% of voters, is Iced tea, with the proportion particularly high in the South compared to the other regions. The preferred alcoholic drink is Beer (35%). When broken down by gender, Beer is tops overall among Males, while Females favor Margaritas.

And what foods to diners avoid most in the summer? You won’t find Hot soup (38%), Hot coffee (18%), Fondue (13%), Ramen (11%), Meatloaf (11%) or Red wine (6%) on their dinner table any time in the next few months.

This year nearly 1,500 respondents weighed in to share their habits and opinions with us for our third-annual National Coffee Survey. The findings reveal that respondents are increasingly purchasing coffee outside of the home (up 8% over 2014), latte art is #trending, as 45% of respondents say they “love it” (up from 38% last year) and the popularity of flat whites is on the rise.

Survey participants typically pay $3.28, on average, for a coffee drink; a steady increase from $3.05 in 2014 and $2.98 in 2013. But how much is too much to pay for a regular cup of joe? Respondents say $3.67, on average. When it comes to barista-prepared coffee, they say $5.07 - a full 38% more.
While the national average number of coffee drinks consumed is 2.1 per day, our results show that coffee consumption increases with age. People in their twenties consume the least number of coffee drinks per day (1.8), compared to those in their thirties (2.0), forties (2.2), fifties (2.4) and sixties (2.4).

When breaking the results out by gender, the survey shows that female coffee drinkers prefer lattes (22%) over a regular cup of coffee (19%), reach for raw sugar (14%) before Splenda (9%), and half-and-half (26%) before skim (19%). And second to making coffee at home or work, they most often buy from large national coffee chains (31%).

As for guys, they favor a regular cup of joe (30%), followed by espresso (14%). A majority (57%) prefer to not add sweetener, while 14% choose raw sugar. Nearly half of men say they like their coffee black (42%), but when they do add the white stuff, half-and-half is the top choice (20%). And when they aren’t brewing at home or work, men are more likely to purchase coffee from smaller chain or single location coffee houses (23%) vs. a large national chain (20%).
According to the 2015 Zagat National Dining Trends survey, released today, it’s Brussels sprouts. The survey is based on the feedback of 10,727 avid diners nationally who shared their habits and preferences when it comes to dining out.

The survey shows that American diners eat out a lot - 4.5 meals (lunch and dinner) per week on average. The most frequent diners are in Atlanta (5.2) followed by Austin, LA and Miami (each at 4.9). Rounding out the bottom of the list is Portland, OR, Minneapolis (both 3.4) and Philadelphia (3.7).

The national average spend per person for dinner out is $39.40. Not surprisingly, New York is the most expensive dining city, followed by east coasters Boston ($42.24) and Miami ($41.35). The least expensive cities - and a relative bargain - are Austin ($25.81), Dallas/Ft. Worth ($30.34), San Diego ($34.10) and Portland, OR ($34.36), hailing from the South/West.

When it comes to gratuities, Americans leave an average 19.3% tip on their restaurant bill. Austin diners, who enjoy the lowest average meal cost, are the most generous tippers, leaving 20%. Following behind are Philadelphia (19.8%), Boston (19.6%), Chicago (19.6%) and Atlanta (19.5%). West coast diners happen to be less generous with Portland, OR (18.3%), Houston (18.4%), San Diego (18.5%), Seattle (18.6%) and San Francisco (18.7%) at the bottom of the list.

Service is the leading dining out irritant followed by Noise, Prices, Crowds, Food and Parking. Diners in Miami take the biggest issue with service (32%), while Portland, OR diners cite Noise (31%) as their chief complaint.

Additional findings: 16% of respondents admit to having stolen something (fork, salt shaker etc.) from a restaurant, with diners in Chicago and Houston (both 24%) reporting the highest instance of this. If a restaurant has a cash-only policy, respondents say they are less likely to go (45%) or avoid these places all together (15%). And what’s on the menu? Italian. It’s the favorite cuisine among diners in every city surveyed except for Austin and Minneapolis, where diners say they prefer American.

According to the survey, Miami diners eat out a lot - 4.9 times per week (lunch and dinner) vs. 4.5 nationally. The average reported spend per person for dinner out is $41.35 which is slightly above the $39.40 national average. When it comes to gratuities, diners leave 19.3% which is on par with national figures.

Service is the No.1 dining out complaint according to 32% of respondents. Following behind are Noise (23%), Prices (14%), Crowds (12%), Food (7%), Parking (5%), and Traffic (4%). The leading complaints about service specifically are inattentive staff, slow service, inadequate training, and early plate clearing.

As with most U.S. cities, Miami diners say their favorite cuisine is Italian (27%), followed by American (14%), Seafood (12%), French (8%), Japanese (8%), Steakhouses (8%), Thai (6%) and Chinese (3%). All others total 14% cumulatively.

When it comes to restaurant reservations, 40% of respondents make them online. That’s below the 61% national average. Additionally, 29% feel it’s rude and inappropriate for children to use tablets/phones at the table.
More than 800 respondents nationwide came to Zagat.com to tell us who they tip, how much they give and why they are shelling out this holiday season.

At this time of year the most common tip to give is money followed by gift cards, a bottle of wine/spirits and baked goods. The average reported cash tips across a variety of service personnel are the highest they’ve been since 2011 - steadily rebounding from a dip in 2012. Thirteen percent say they are planning to tip “more” this year vs. only 3% who say “less.”

When asked about the reasoning behind who and how much they tip during the holidays, respondents say “based on wanting to express gratitude” (53%), “where it’s deserved for work and assistance” (29%), “obligation” (14%), “fear of negative consequences if I don’t” (2%), and other reasons (2%).

And if you’re giving something other than cash, be careful of what you choose -- 27% of surveyors admit to re-gifting non-cash gifts.

Happy Holidays!
